Ali Beachman-Exploring Digital Archives

An interesting archive that I searched was the Library of Congress – Prints & Photographs at the URL: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/.  This archive lists seventy collections in alphabetical order.  Some of the collections included are baseball cards, WPA posters, WWI posters, Civil War photographs and photographs of Southern architecture.  The search bar allows you to search all collections or within a specific collection.  The advanced search option allows you to search items by their title, subject or creator/name fields as well as match any or all words.  Within a specific collection, you have the option to view all of the images in a list, gallery, or slide format.  For each item, the archive lists the title, creator, date created/published and medium on which the item was created.  The archive also includes a summary of the image and links to similar items regarding the format and subjects depicted.  Each item has a tab advising you on how to obtain copies/gain access to the original image, however no citation information is provided.
