Food for thought: US media did NOT cover Berlin Wall fall as celebretory until late 1990s!


NPR’s “On the Media” radio show did a fascinating story on how US news media’s images of the destruction of the Berlin Wall changed radically over time.  Those joyous images we have today were not generally seen in US TV’s coverage at the time (although I do remember watching the live coverage that night, and I do remember these images were there), and was tempered by deep anxiety over what a reunified Germany might mean.  Only after the rise of the EU as a trading partner in the late 1990s did US news coverage of the anniversaries shift to focus on the celebratory images we now “remember.”   Listen to it here:
